Are you looking at fandom short stories, professional short stories, both, what?

Short stories, professionally published or not. Not so much fanfiction, though I do think there's some worthy fanfic writing, but this is for someone else, who I suspect only watches reality tv shows.

Ha! I fail at answering in a timely manner! (Does that win me anything? *facepalm*)

I don't read lots of short stories outside of fandom (I don't like getting invested into the characters/situations and then having them being abandoned by the end of it. Which is one of the advantages that fandom has, even when one story/series ends, someone is always writing something else with them, even if it is an entirely different situation.)

So this is a selection somewhat filtered through what I've read recently enough that I remember them:

I imagine you would enjoy An Old-Fashioned Unicorn's Guide to Courtship by Maya (pen-name in HP fandom)/Mistful (LJ name)/Sarah Rees Brennan (real name). **

Connie Willis is awesome. The ones that stick in my mind at the moment are: "Even The Queen," "At the Rialto," and "Spice Pogrom".

"The Mountains of Morning" by Lois McMaster Bujold.

**And I have no idea if you are at all into HP fanfic, but if you have possibly any leanings towards it (and even if you think you don't!), you should go to this post... )

I am a proud book geek, so I must have icons to match my geekyness. :)

Thanks for the recs, I shall look into those! :D It's for a Christmas present, so no worries about tardiness.
