When I was quite young
and quite small for my size,
I met an old man in the Desert of Drize.
And he sang me a song I will never forget.
At least, well, I haven't forgotten it yet.
(Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?)
I, being the odd duck that I am, never liked the Cat in the Hat books. That Cat just never sat well with me. But I love everything else I've read by Dr Seuss. They are so imaginative and fun and you really can't help falling into the rhythm of the stories. Reading them as an adult, I still get giddy and happy following the rhythmic rhymes and bright pictures. :) They have such amazing layers for nonsense and gibberish, too.
I also have fond memories of the Dr Seuss movies from when I was a wee girl. You know, the ones that Theodor Geisel actually had a hand in and that were animated in classic cartoon style and that didn't try to make a feature-length movie out of a few pages of nonsense. I have refused to see all of the new Dr Seuss movies on principle (and also because they just look dreadful even if I leave out the bad-adaptation factor). The essence of Dr Seuss is the nonsense verse and the vivid illustrations. You can't put that into a live-action movie or even a CG-animated movie, especially if you're also trying to cram in an actual plot. It is just so very wrong.
"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities."
