Spring term started on Monday. I'm still doing core classes, so it's not especially exciting, though one of them is actually on a topic that interests me, yay! So I'm taking 635- Management and Administration for the Information Professional" (ew) and 690- Information Technology (yay).
The Management class looks to be as boring as I imagined. =/ But at least the professor is nice. I just think it's stupid that we're essentially required to take a business class; none of the material relates to libraries at all. All the case studies are about other types of companies/organizations. I read the first case study and I'm so lost. Not an auspicious beginning. Perhaps the textbook will provide illumination? (Haha.) I feel like I might possibly have a slightly better chance at understanding this stuff if it was related to libraries so I'd know how it'll possibly fit into my future career. Hopefully we'll relate it to libraries in class discussions? (Also, there was stupid drama in group-forming during the first class. The short version is that I was in a group in class, was emailed after class by said group informing me that they had too many members already, and was assigned back to that same group by the TA because they didn't actually have enough members. Um?)
The Info Tech class, though, seems really cool! :) I'm not a huge tech geek, but I'm geekier than the average person, so it's familiar territory for me. I even answered a question in class (about why a megabyte is actually 1,024 bytes and not an even thousand). And the class was essentially a super-condensed review of that computer class I took at SBCC last spring, so I wasn't lost (like a lot of people were). Woo! Also? The professor is awesome! He doesn't have a library degree; his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. are all in mechanical engineering, but he's a space geek (he's the one I met at KidsTeam last semester when he dropped in to show us
space vids) and he flew airplanes in the Navy for 15 years. So at least one of my classes is interesting. :)
And today at work, my boss gave me a reference question to look up. My task was to see if we had any photos of the "Royal Crown of Hungary" for an email patron and look it up online to see if I could find any leads. I flipped through the photo box for Budapest, but all I found was one photo of "St Stephen's Crown". So I dug around online and it seems to be the same thing. Waiting to hear back from the patron to make sure, but I had fun looking it up. I love a good research question. Good to know I'm on the right career track. ;)
I should go do some homework reading now. Man, it's so hard to get back into the homework mentality after a month off. *sigh*
