Title: Into the Fire
Author: Wingsss
Rating: G
Warnings: Spoilers up to and including the promos for 3x17, "Countdown"
Summary: Written for the first castle_fic fic fest, by request of syd_15. The song is “Into the Fire” by Thirteen Senses.
A/N: I don’t own Castle. Also, I actually have no idea how long two people could survive together in a freezer, so this time line is basically made up.

Come on, come on

Put your hands into the fire…
This time, this time

Turning white and senses dire

Pull up, pull up

From one extreme to another.

They’ve been stuck here for hours. It’s not just his short attention span talking this time; they are really honest to God stuck. He can’t remember the last time he actually had nothing to say to Kate.
He feels incredibly stupid, or he would if he wasn’t so goddamn cold.cBecause if they’re really going to die then he should be telling her everything while he still has the chance. Why does this feel so much more real than any of the times he had a gun to his head?
(He knows why-it’s because they can’t talk their way out of this one.)

---
They gave up on their pretenses about an hour in. Kate didn’t carry gloves, and there were actual ice crystals forming on her bare skin. Derek Storm had once gotten frostbite in A Chilling Storm but Rick quickly learned he had gotten it all wrong. It was starting to feel more like fire than cold and there was a pain he could feel radiating in his bones.
So somehow they found themselves on the floor (as far as possible from the frozen dead guy, because detective or not that was creepy.) Rick tried to hold her as close as he could-but when he imagined this in his head his mood was usually exultant not acquiescent. He imagined her as warm but she was-unsurprisingly-cold to her bones.

---
He’s pretty sure one of the symptoms of severe hypothermia is delirium, and he knows she’s lost her mind because he’s pretty sure she was about to say “I just want you to know I love you” before she passed out. He’s trying not to think about the implications of that too much because the “writer’s imagination” that pictured them dying of radiation poisoning is pretty positive that when Ryan and Esposito open up this freezer-5 minutes from now or 5 years from now-they’re going to find three dead bodies.
Before he too succumbs to the pain that radiates from his fingers and toes like the constant ring of a tuning fork, he presses a gentle kiss to her lips. The contrast between this tender moment-shivering, slow, and calculated-and the kiss they shared outside the warehouse made his heart ache. Then, their kiss had been full of passion and fire; a million feelings they were too scared to say and might never get to now. So he thinks that if this really is it he is not going out without a fight. With the last of his energies, he spills his guts. He’s pretty positive Kate can’t hear him, so he tells her-finally-that he is in love with her, that she’ll never get rid of him, that she is his “one and done” because he hadn’t the slightest idea about what being “done” actually meant before he met her…
At last, his skin burns like fire and his bare hands blister an angry shade of red but everything started to get a little less painful, a little less real. Maybe they would be okay, after all. If he just shut his eyes…
