Luna flopped lazily onto the couch next to Sohyun after packing a small bag of loose toys and zip-locked snacks for Chohee. The anxious feeling returned as it did every weekend when Key had to show up.

“Now what?” Sohyun mumbled, playing with the ends of her hair.

They both looked over at the door.

“We wait,” Luna sighed. “He’s always late.”

“I believe you.” Sohyun glanced up and pointed towards the ceiling. “Don’t you wanna bring her down?”

Prepared for a five minute doze, Luna closed her eyes. “She’ll come when she hears the doorbell.”

As if on cue, the bell from the front door echoed throughout the house. The pitter-patter made by small feet was heard from the second floor and then a sudden thump.

Sohyun raised an eyebrow. “What was that?”

“Can you check?” Luna asked and grabbed the door.

It had become a habit for Key to look down at the welcome mat before actually acknowledging Luna’s presence. It was still difficult for him to face her after everything that went awry in his junior year of high school.

“Hey.”

Luna exhaled. “Hi.”

“Is she ready?”

“For the past half hour, yes.” She turned to see Sohyun holding Chohee’s hand down the stairs.

The toddler grinned. “Daddy!”

Key released his surpressed emotion and smiled. “Hi, sweetie.”

“She fell,” Sohyun stated matter-of-factly. “But she’s fine. No bruises.”

“Oh, good.” Luna bent down to her daughter and helped her with her Dora coat. “Are you gonna behave for Daddy?”

Key took the bag hanging by the end of the staircase and swung it around his shoulder. “She always does.”

Sohyun sat down at the bottom of the staircase and watched the broken family communicate awkwardly. Chohee was almost four and Luna was entering her second year of university. Times sure had changed since Key had impregnated Luna when she was a sophomore in high school.

And I thought my life was a screw-up, Sohyun thought to herself. Her freshman year was clearly too memorable.

Luna stood back up and gently guided Chohee over to Key. The young girl hugged her father by his knees. He lowered himself to kiss the top of her head.

“Gosh, Key. Don’t do that. I actually think you’re a human being at times,” Sohyun said sheepishly, cupping her hand over her ear and under her long hair.

“Yeah?” He smirked, reminiscing the days when he wasn’t such a good guy.

Sohyun shrugged. “Maybe.”

Chohee tugged on Key’s jeans. “Da da, I drew a picture of you and mommy.”

”Together,” Sohyun emphasized, trying to lighten the mood.

Key shared a look with Luna. “Really.”

Luna shook her head, folding her arms. “I haven’t seen it. Apparently it’s hung up at school.”

“Oh. I’d love to see it, baby,” he told Chohee. “But I don’t get you on the weekdays.”

“Sorry, honey,” Luna said quietly. “Maybe you can bring it home one day for Daddy. Okay?”

Chohee pouted with disappointment. Luna knew there was a student-parent day on the upcoming Monday, but it was something she wanted to do. Then again, she had tons of chances for time with Chohee. She wasn’t sure when she would give Key the chance.

Just as they were about to leave, Luna stopped them.

“Wait. Listen to me.” She breathed in and said, “Take her for three days. There’s something going on at school and I’m sure she wants you there.”

Key looked grateful. “You sure?”

Chohee was ecstatic and it only pushed Luna further to say yes.
