Spoilers, needless to say.
The real heroes of this ep are Ray and Chris, but Ray especially. Though, I do applaud Gene's restraint, I just sort of wish there was no love connection going on. It bothers the hell out of me because I'm a Missus/Gene shipper. (And a closet Gene/dead!Sam shipper.) Just...no Alex. She has no place with Gene beyond a purely professional relationship, ESPECIALLY if she's going to keep pulling this bullshit about figments and 80's constructs. It's demeaning to Gene and he doesn't deserve that load of twaddle.
But now I probably sound like one of those batshit Rose/Doctor shippers that can't stand Martha. Does it count that I adore Shaz?
Let's move on. Chris. Normally, I'd probably be upset that they're turning Chris into more of a class clown than he used to be. Except I'm not, because Marshall Lancaster makes it work. I'm really just in love with the extra screen time he has. I like seeing a range from him too--from the angst in episode 1 to the crack in this ep with Clark Kent-Superman outfit and the stuff with the gnomes. Oh Chris, you dork.
RAY! Buddy, you rock so damn hard. Yeah, it's easy to play a bloke that nobody likes, but Deano makes it so much better because you can tell Ray's got a heart under that nasty turtleneck and he's raunchy and hysterical, but also kinda nice on occasion too. That takes talent there. Good characterization and great acting. He looked quite adorkable when Alex was being all slutty. I'm really digging Ashes!Ray. Let's hope next time he's lest clumsy with the sammiches though.
Alex. *pauses for the eye rolling to stop* She needs to really not be a slut. There's sexually repressed, and there's TV. I don't want to watch Freud, m'kay? And I would thank her and have just a wee bit of respect for her if she'd stop toying with Gene. I'd like her even more if she didn't have to find a surrogate Gene in a weirdo with braces.
Gene, I know you liked the 70's, but it's time to make your tie hang just a little bit lower. It should touch the top of your belt, please. But considering that's the only think I really have to criticise you on, you're doing all right. By the way, THANK YOU FOR CATCHING THE RIGHT CRIMINAL THIS TIME AND SEEING THROUGH THE CRAZY NOT-PROZZIE LADY'S TRICK THIS WEEK. I knew you had it in you! (And I know it's not your fault, it's the writers'. I apologize, but it needed to be mentioned.)
If Bowie's Ashes to Ashes video had had a postman instead of a clown, would Alex be tormented by a deranged letter carrier? If only. :(
In other news, I think James May is one of the smartest, yet oddly attractive men on TV today. Figured I'd get that out there.
