Trick R Treat

I've FINALLY gotten my chance to watch [Trick 'R Treat], after a year of hearing about just how bloody good it is.

My verdict is: It is an EXCELLENT movie.

Set over the course of one Halloween night in the small town of Warren Valley, Ohio, [Trick 'R Treat] follows several intertwining stories as the town's residents celebrate the holiday, in their own special ways.

First, we meet Henry and Emma, a couple with split opinions on Halloween. He loves it. She hates it. But she is eventually taught to love it - the hard way. There's also Steven Wilkins, a high school principal, who catches a neighborhood kid smashing jack-o-lanterns and stealing candy, and decides to punish him. Steven's neighbor is Mr. Kreeg, an old Halloween-hating grouch with a dark secret in his past that threatens to surface once again. We also follow a group of teenagers as they sneak away to an abandoned quarry to pay their respect to the children who perished in the school bus massacre. And lastly, a bunch of young women drive in from the city to join in the Halloween celebrations, and to help one of their own, the sweet virginal Laurie, find that special guy. Finally, tying all these stories together is a strange little costumed figure, Sam (loosely derived from the term for the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain) whose presence throughout the film grows increasingly sinister.

I think it's important to understand the objective of this movie. People who did not like the movie as much tended to be ones who assumed it to be a gorefest or a straightforward supernatural/horror flick. Really, that's not the true nature of the film. It's a tribute to Halloween, celebrating all that is fun, creepy and atmospheric about it. You know gothic fairytales - children stories that appear innocent and menacing at the same time? Yep, [Trick 'R Treat] is like that. 5 interweaving stories may sound confusing but rest assured that the film ties all the narratives up very tightly. That said, I did watch the film several times so that I can digest everything thoroughly. The pacing is quick, the acting superb, and even the music is well-done.

Go watch it. ^^
