Describe a chance encounter that changed your life

May 26, 2006 00:22

It's strange how every major change in my life seems due in one way or another to pirates. Pirates killed my father, and as a result, I sailed to the New World to find out what happened to him. On the way, my ship was attacked by pirates and I nearly drowned. Years later, I found a pirate in the blacksmith's shop and attempted to fight him. I would have won, if he had fought fair, but that's beside the point. He soon proved to be a valuable ally, and is now a good friend. He helped me to rescue Elizabeth, who was captured by pirates shortly after his arrival. In turn, she and I later joined together to rescue him from the noose, and we are now engaged to be married. (Elizabeth and I, that is.) So all of those encounters, be them by chance or otherwise, have changed my life in very important ways.

If I had to choose one, however, it would be that day when I was a young boy, sailing on my own in search of my father - or at the least, in search of the truth about his death. Why the pirates chose to attack us is still a mystery to me. We had no wealth on board, no treasure. It was a merchant ship, and not even a particularly fine one. But they set upon us nonetheless, and every man aboard was either killed or tossed into the sea and the ship burned. I have no memory of how I ended up on that bit of wood, but it's a lucky thing I did. Without it, I'd have surely died that day. As is was, another ship sailed close enough to spot me out there, and I was saved, thanks to the keen eye of a young girl on board. Elizabeth. They fished me out of the water and brought me back to their port in Jamaica, where I have lived ever since. Had it not been for that pirate ship, or for the Governor's ship's route crossing ours at the right time, I have no idea where I might be today, or what sort of life I would have. But I do know that I can't imagine a better life that the one that chance encounter gave me.

ooc: The mun is getting very anxious for the sequel to be released, and to finally have new canon to draw from for these prompts!
