Is Philly still the most unfriendly town you know of?
That question was recently posed to me. Truthfully, I don’t think Philadelphia is a totally unfriendly place, but there’s a reputation that the residents are not friendly, and I think it’s partially earned. For example, the fact that you’re a patron and potential customer in a Philly store does not mean the proprietor will be nice to you. Nevertheless, I always enjoy visiting Philly, where I spent my college years. The city has a lot of energy and life.
I did also get to see a couple (married?) fighting at pretty high volume while they walked across a parking lot. And a man being verbally harassed by some other men while he was walking into a gas station store. …I guess those things happen everywhere.
On a more entertaining note, at the Phillies game on Thursday, there were a couple spectators behind me who were in fine form. When the umpire made a questionable call: “Kill him!” When Bobby Abreu grounded out with runners in scoring position: “F**king a**hole!” Ah, that’s what I remember from games at the old stadium.
