Why do you take a certain major?
Why do you plan on a certain career?
Why do you think you can do it?
Why? Why? Why? probably plague your brain a lot, thoughts that add so much doubt to your system that, sometimes, you can't even bring yourself to do anything, because... what good could it do?
Okay, so maybe there are more than "why"s- maybe there are a few "how"s- How will I find a job after college? How will I write a persuasive essay for my college application or make a good impression in my college interview? How do I find ways to make myself more... desirable to colleges or grad school?
& maybe that's just me (though I highly doubt it). As a pre-med student, I understand the statistics even if I haven't yet taken a class on them. Less than fifty percent of undergrads make it as a doctor. From there, maybe twenty percent actually make it through a residency program to become actual doctors.
That whole process, to be a doctor, takes twelve to fourteen years. Four years undergrad, four years med school, four to seven years.
That's a long time & a lot of money.
Of course, doctors & other professions are extreme examples. Most people may go through four years of undergrad & four years of grad school before entering the job market. Employers are looking for people with certain experiences & skills, so if you're missing the computer skills required for a job because you decided to study up on how to debate the ethical & legal issues of euthanasia, you are out of luck.
Which is why those questions are rather important.
So why are you doing what you're doing? Is it because you have a dream? Do you think you have a calling? Is it for the money?
The point I am trying to make is this- make sure you really want what you are going for & work for it. Almost nothing just falls into your lap. In most cases, it involves hours of studying & getting involved in volunteer opportunities among other things. It isn't easy, but if you really want something, it's totally worth it.
As long as you know that's what you want for sure, there can be no regrets.
