Gilbert sat beneath a tree, her dance card in his hands. Had he lost his chance? What would have happened if he had just danced with her? Sure, he may have made himself a fool and laughing stock, but at least he could have held her for a few moments.
"So you were the culprit," he heard from behind him.
He hid the dance card.
"Culprit? Culprit of what?"
"Oh, I think you know quite well. Diana said she thought I had a secret admirer. But it was only you."
"What I'm not a secret admirer?"
"I don't know. Do you admire me in secret?"
"If I told you, it wouldn't be a secret."
"You can keep the card, but next time, please refrain from taking it."
"Maybe you shouldn't leave it where I can take it."
"Oh, so it's my fault? Sorry, I didn't realize we had such a problem with people stealing things," Anne retorted, feeling her temper rising.
"I'm sorry Anne. I was just teasing."
"Why did you take it?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Try me," Anne challenged.
"Okay, you asked for it. I didn't want you dancing with any other men."
"Why not?"
"Because I would get jealous if I saw that."
"Why?"
"Because I like you Anne, okay? I know you hate me. But everyone here can tell I like you. Everyone except you apparently."
"Oh."
"I'm sorry Anne. I just didn't want you to know because I know you didn't reciprocate the feelings. I know that you don't even want to be my friend. I get it. Why did you come here again?"
"Umm," Anne stuttered, feeling taken back. "Marilla wanted to know if your mother had some white sugar she could have. Marilla's baking and is short a cup of sugar."
"Let me go find out."
Gilbert disappeared into the house and came back a bit later with a cup of sugar.
"Here."
"Tell your mother thank you."
