Gilbert threw a pebble into Barry's Pond, shattering the still reflection of the sky into the water. Was he any better this way? She was the girl of his dreams, and now they were not even friends. All because he just had to give her an ultimatum between marriage and no contact. It was hard to be friends with her. But at least he could still be with her. He was an idiot.
"Hey Gil," he heard a small voice behind him say.
He turned around and saw Anne.
"May I sit with you a bit? I'd like to say something."
"Of course. Please don't act so scared. I won't bite."
"You got to have your moment of bluntness in your feelings. I want mine now."
"Granted."
"I've missed you. I've cried over no longer being friends with you. I hate that you put me on the spot like that. I've never considered the possibility of me being in love with you. I hated you for so long that when we finally became friends and I realized you were a kindred spirit, I did not want anything ruining that. Plus I had my ideals. But ideals are only for stories. I know that now. We don't create the people we love, we can't fabricate what the idea of love is."
"What do you want from me?" Gilbert asked, not in annoyance, but in confusion on why she was telling him all of this.
"Gil. . .I can't live without you. I need you in my life."
"Are you accepting my proposal then?"
"Yes. I love you Gilbert Blythe. I have for a long time. I just didn't realize that."
"Oh Anne!" he exclaimed, taking her into a hug. "Thank you!"
"You're welcome," she replied, laughing.
"May I kiss you?"
"You're my fiancé. Of course you may."
Gilbert smiled before leaning in for a kiss he thought he would only receive in his dreams.
"Was it everything you thought it would be?" Anne asked when the kiss broke.
In response, Gilbert leaned in for another kiss.
"Am I a disappointment compared to your dreams?" Gilbert asked.
Anne smiled and gave him a reprimanding look.
"Gilbert Blythe, I hope you'll always know that you are better than any man I ever dreamed of. You are everything I could ask from a fiancé."
