Summary: Tom and Paul begin planning their wedding
I tapped my pen against the opened blank notebook before me.
“Alright, what all do we need?” I asked.
“Location. Food. Music. Vows. Rings.”
I jotted down the words by corresponding numbers.
“Do we want flowers?” Paul asked.
I chewed thoughtfully on the pen.
“Have you ever been to a wedding without them?”
“Very true. On, we’ll need a wedding party.”
“Someone to officiate.”
Paul suddenly started laughing.
“What’s so funny giggles?” I asked, feeling a smile forming on my lips.
Paul trying saying something, but it was unintelligible.
“Have you just lost it?” I asked, laughing myself.
“We told people we were engaged, but we never told anyone we were having a wedding.”
“We haven’t told our families!”
“Call your parents. We should stop planning until everyone knows.”
“Can we at least pick a date?”
Paul took my hand.
“No.”
I felt my face fall.
“Kidding! Of course we can.”
“I want a spring wedding.”
“What about May?”
“May 23,” I decided.
“We should find a year that’s a Saturday.”
“Saturday is a good day,” I said, grabbing a calendar. “The first possible year is. . .2016.”
Paul laughed.
“I’m not waiting that long to marry you,” he said.
“Nor I you.”
“Okay, what about the last Saturday of May 2011?”
“Sounding better,” I said. “That would make it May 28.”
“Perfect,” Paul said, grabbing my notebook.
I put the calendar back, and then re-claimed my notebook. Paul had written “May 28, 2011” on the top and had drawn hearts around it.
“Now call your parents.”
“Hi Mom, it’s Tom. I just wanted to let you know I’m coming home this weekend?”
Paul nodded, signaling the day worked for him.
“I’m bringing someone.”
I laughed as my mother screamed.
“Oh it’s Paul isn’t it? I’m so glad you’re finally bringing someone home. This is so wonderful! I can’t wait. I’ll see you next Friday.”
“Bye Mom. I love you.”
“Love you too. Bye.”
“She loves you already. No pressure,” I said as I ended the call.
“I’m sure I’ll love your parents. After all, they raised you.”
I was certain I was blushing as I looked down.
“Nuh-uh. Look up here.”
Paul guided my face toward his for a kiss.
“What about your dad?”
“What? Telling him?”
“Yes.”
“He’s having a hard enough time with the fact that we’re kissing. I’m not sure how he’d react if he actually saw us kiss, let alone knowing we have approaching nuptials.”
“I want you to be able to invite him. He’ll be better if you give him a big head’s up rather than the night before.”
“I know. I just need a little time.”
“Of course.”
I put my arm around him and began rubbing his arm. Paul put his head against my shoulder.
“I love you, but I don’t envy your situation. However, I wish I could make it easier.”
“Honey, you do. If you had been a jerk-wad who broke my heart, it would make my father even colder towards my sexuality. At least he got to meet someone charming who takes my breath away and makes me feel amazing.”
“You are amazing. I can’t wait to be married to you.”
