Summary: Tom is released from the hospital after his car crash.

I sat alone in a hospital room, awaiting the results of my tests. I looked around the room, reading, but not truly comprehending, the posters on the walls. I wished so much that Paul, or my parents, or someone, could be there. I closed my eyes and conjured up the image of Paul’s smiling face in an attempt to calm myself. I felt jittery just sitting there.
“Mr. Parkers?” a woman in a white lab coat said as she walked into the room. “My name is Dr. Walter.”
“Hi,” I said, shaking her hand.
“The good news is, there was no concussion, broken bones or anything major like that. However, you were badly bruised, so every movement will, pardon my language, hurt like hell. If you haven’t noticed that yet, you soon will. I will give you a prescription for pain medication, but I give it to you with a warning: only take it as prescribed, and only take it when the pain feels unmanageable. This will prevent you from becoming addicted. Take 1 pill every 8 hours in the beginning, and like I said, as your bruises heal, take it less often. Do you have any questions?”
“I’m just curious when I can leave.”
“Here’s your prescription, and you’re free to leave. However, per hospital regulation, you will have to leave in a wheelchair.”
“I understand.”
She helped me into a wheelchair she wheeled over from the corner of the room.
“Is there someone waiting for you?”
“Yes, I believe Paul should be here.”
She wheeled me into the doorway to the waiting room, and Paul jumped up and hurried over to us.
“Is he ready to go doctor?”
“Yes he is. Let me get an orderly to wheel him out, and meanwhile you can pull your vehicle up to the door via the circular drive.”
Paul helped the orderly get me into the passenger’s seat of his car. As the orderly headed back inside, Paul turned to look at me.
“How are you?”
“Starting to feel sore, but glad to be out of there.”
“I’m glad you’re okay. Well, relatively okay.”
“Me too. Do I look horrible?”
“You’re asking the wrong person,” Paul said with a laugh. “You look beat up, but I think you still look gorgeous. Would it hurt you too much if I were to kiss you?”
“I don’t care if it did, I want to kiss you too.”
Paul gingerly touched my face and was careful as we kissed.
“I hope you know I plan on waiting on you hand and foot. I’ve talked with Jessica and Brad and we’ve set up shifts.”
“You’re sweet. Just do me one favor: don’t let it interfere with your schoolwork.”
“I won’t. I love you Tom.”
“I love you too Paul. So please, get some sleep. You look exhausted.”
I leaned across the seat to kiss his cheek.
“I wish I could have protected you from this.”
“I know baby, I know.”
I reached out and touched his hand on the steering wheel. He removed it to hold my hand.
“You look so fragile, I’m afraid to break you.”
“I’m tough. You couldn’t easily break me.”
“Did you get a painkiller?”
“I got a prescription for one.”
“Did you want to fill it now?”
“Might as well.”
Paul pulled away from the curb. We drove in silence for a few moments before I asked,
“How are you doing?”
“Just trying to come to grips. I was freaked out. No one wants to hear his boyfriend was in an accident and is in the hospital.”
“I would have freaked out if the roles were reversed.”
We spent that evening curled up on my couch watching television. My head was resting on Paul’s shoulder. I sat up and kissed his cheek.
“Thank you babe. For everything.”
Paul smiled before kissing my lips. I kept my eyes closed as he gently kissed the bruises on my face.
“When I was younger I thought nothing could heal a boo-boo like a kiss from Mom. But I’ve got to say, I think a kiss from you is better.”
“That’s only because at 21, it’s weird to have your injuries kissed by your mother.”
“Or maybe it’s because I love you in a different way.”
“Well, I would hope so, otherwise you’d be a creep.”
I laughed.
“Every time I see you smile, I’m insanely jealous of the man you will marry.”
“Hey, don’t worry about that. Right now, I’m with you, and that’s all that matters.”
I didn’t tell him I hope he was the one I would marry because, I couldn't imagine loving another man the way I love him, and because I couldn’t imagine him being with anyone else.
