“Hey come for a run with me,” I said, poking my head in Paul’s room.
“Is that an order or a request?” Paul asked, raising an eyebrow at me.
“Will you please come for a run with me? It’s a beautiful day and it would be sad to waste it staying indoors.”
“Okay,” Paul said smiling, “I’ll come. Give me a moment to change into something more conducive to running.”
“Can I watch?”
“You’re such a creep, you know that?”
“Hey, I’m the fiancé; I have the prerogative.”
We began at more of a steady jog, going around the familiar paths which weaved amongst the trees. There was a gentle wind to counteract the heat the sun was giving off.
“I’ll race you. First one to tire loses,” Paul said.
And we both broke into sprints. After a while, Paul broke a head of me, but his lead didn’t last long until he had stopped, panting, hands on his knees. I slowed down, grinning and panting.
“Beat you,” I said, rubbing his back.
“Ugh, seriously?” we heard from behind us.
We turned, and a young man with dark hair and the build of a football player stood behind us.
“Can I help you with something?” I asked.
“Yeah, stop rubbing my face into your homoness. Seriously, it’s disgusting.”
“How am I rubbing your face into anything? I didn’t even do anything sexual.”
“Oh give me a break. First of all, stop acting like this is just about you. Both of you are obviously fags. Secondly, you touched him. How much gayer can you get?”
“First of all, leave him out of this,” I said motioning to Paul. “Secondly you’re a football player right?”
“Yeah, so?”
“You slap your teammates on the ass don’t you? Doesn’t that seem gayer that touching someone’s back?”
“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
He looked like he wanted to say more, but couldn’t come up with something, so he pushed Paul.
“Hey,” I said, grabbing the guy by the arm. “Don’t touch him.”
“Aww, did I hurt your widdle boyfriend? Is he gonna go cwy now?”
“Is it manly now to talk in baby talk to adults? Because frankly, I find it quite immature.”
He managed to use his arm as a lever, and he pushed me against a tree, his arm that I still held pushing into my chest.
“Don’t you tell me what’s mature or not. You’re a sick, perverted bastard.”
He pushed his arm harder into my chest, pushing me more against the tree trunk.
“Stop it, you’re hurting him,” I heard Paul say.
“Nope, now I’m hurting him,” he said, moving his arm so it pressed against my Adam’s apple.
I began to gasp for air, finding it suddenly hard to breathe.
I watched as Paul came up behind the guy, and tried pulling his arm off of me. Paul was strong, but the guy was stronger. I closed my eyes, and willed myself the strength to blindly kick at the guy as hard as I could. I made contact, and his arm slipped from me as he grabbed where I had kicked and crumpled to the ground.
“If you come near either one of us again, I will call the cops so fast it will make your head spin.”
Once we were out of hearing and sight range, I glanced over at Paul, and realized he looked unsettled.
“Honey, what is it?” I asked.
“Have I failed you?” he asked.
“What? What do you mean?”
“I don’t feel like I did enough. I don’t feel like I acted quick enough. He wanted to kill you, and I didn’t even feel like I was seeing red. I was just scared stiff.”
“Oh sweetie,” I said. “All anyone could ask from you in that situation is not to help throw stones. I’m not a damsel in distress, and I never wanted a boyfriend who would come running every time I got a paper cut. Trust me, you are my whole world, and I still love you. I think you acted admirably.”
“I want you safe. I want to protect you,” Paul said, brushing my cheek with his hand.
I grabbed his hand as it fell and kissed it.
“You are my superhero, know that.”
“I do,” Paul said and kissed me. “And I love you too.”
