Happy Thoughts

This was something I wrote for my best friend, because she was unhappy. I thought I would keep a copy of it here too.

Please read and let me know what you think.

The sun is shinning and you can smell the salt in the air. It mixes slightly with the heat from the sun. It smells…musky and muggy. Although it’s only early, you know it’s going to be a hot day, with a possible thunder storm at the end. You revel in it’s feel as you walk to a near by garden. You can smell the flowers. They are strong and yet you’re not sure if it’s the jasmine you smell or if it’s something else.

In the distance you can hear little kids laughing and calling to each other. Rationally you know they are on the beach across the road, but it feels like it’s surround sound. It’s the perfect beach weather.

Without a care in the world you cross the road to watch them. It makes you smile.

The sand in your toes is already warm. Soon it will be to hot to stand on without shoes. The bay of the sea is calling to you. The water is a deep sapphire blue today. It’s a refreshing sound to listen to the waves crashing before you.

However as much as you desire to walk down there something else is calling you away. It’s your name, and it takes a while to filter through the drifting thoughts of your brain. You turn around and scratch your head beneath your hat. It’s itchy, but it’s the *good* itchy. The itchy that comes with summer and the beach.

You look up to the apartments where you are staying and you can see that your family is calling to you for breakfast. Breakfast, is served abnormally late and should really be considered as brunch. You wave to them and smile. It’ll only take a few minutes to get up there.

But you hesitate before you cross the road again. You look back up and you can see the Christmas tree and the lights through the patio’s glass doors. It makes your smile widen. Yesterday you had spent hours decorating the tiny little apartment with tinsel while signing Christmas carols. It feels peaceful.

Breakfast is a huge meal. There’s bacon, eggs, toast, tomatoes, pancakes, cereal, coffee and of course champagne and peaches. Your senses feel overloaded with delightful smells. You have know idea where to start to eat. You want to eat it all, but you know rationally that would never happen and that there will be left overs for dinner.

It’s afternoon by the time you finish and clean up. The humidity has risen and it’s so hot that you feel like a stuff potato slowly baking. Some of your family have gone to read books, while others go for lye down. You can see the gathering clouds that promise a good storm. If your lucky you will be able to get a short walk to the near by point look out.

The hill is steep, but at the top the view of the water crashing on to the rocks below is worth it. The spot makes you think of the past, when you use to sit up there and just stare out to sea for ages. You wish you could do that now, but the first claps of thunder have rings out and the first few drops of rain start to fall.

You are hurrying back, along the foot paths that are covered with long, flexible leaves form the pine trees. You reach the doors of the main foyer and you are saturated. The water is cool on your hot skin, but the heat of the day has not broken. The heat of the past week has not broken. You sigh. It’s going to be another long hot night.

Stepping out of the shower, you towel dry your hair. You can hear crickets outside and the sound of a green tree frog. You sit on the patio and watch the sunset, knowing tomorrow is going to be much the same.
