BRIGHTON TWP. - A preacher and his wife were cut down by gunfire Saturday night at a Peck Wadsworth Road home west of state Route 511, leaving one dead and one fighting to stay alive.
Sue Petric, 43, died before police arrived at the scene. She was shot once in the arm and once in the head, said Deputy Coroner Stephen Evans.
Her husband, Mark Petric, pastor of New Life Assembly of God in Wellington and member of the Lorain County Pastor’s Network, was shot once in the face, Evans said.
The bullet remained lodged there and he was taken by ambulance to Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin, he said.
Evans is calling Sue Petric’s death a homicide, he said.
Mark Petric was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was in critical condition late Saturday.
Evans said hospital personnel were hopeful he would survive despite losing a tremendous amount of blood.
The couple’s daughter and son-in-law - who were planning to watch the Cleveland Indians game on television with the family - arrived at the house, discovered the bloody scene inside about 7 p.m. and called 911, Evans said.
A male relative was arrested in Wellington and remains in custody, County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Gallagher said.
The suspect is 16, according to Evans, and was the only other person in the house with the victims at the time of the shooting.
