If you've sailed a bit I'd skip Comp Crew and go straight for Day Skipper. Like if you know what all the bits of the boat are called, can tie a bowline, etc etc. You can do the theory bit in Hammersmith too!
I didn't realise you could do that. I suspect with a bit of revision I'd be alright - however, I've done a week or so in a dinghy more than half my life ago (I even got RYA level 2), and two days in Sydney Harbour - not sure that counts as 'a bit' or not!
Oh yeah, there are very few rules in sailing. You can in fact just get a boat and go with no qualifications at all. The only thing stopping you doing that in practice is that no charter company's insurance would cover it. But in your own boat, you can do as you please. It's all about the Freedom!
Where are you doing the Day Skipper? I was thinking of doing a weeks holiday with one of the firms that do the training in Greece or somewhere like that.
It might have to be local - we seem to already have plans for most of our holiday for next year, an extra week off might not work.
Apparently Lanzarote is quite cheap for such courses. Although I've also heard Lanzarote can be very windy, not sure that would be ideal for learning to skipper!
