Food, glorious food

As you all know, nisaba cannot chew, and is unlikely to regain the ability to chew for 6-8 weeks, and that could be an optimistic prognosis. I thought I'd update you on how it's going from my side... It upsets me to see Peta struggling to eat, and that she occasionally has to watch from the sidelines as I tuck into something she'd enjoy - while I'm going ( Read more... )

I have some nice soup recipes, if you want them? Mind you, many of them came about because I cooked some stuff up with stock and then pureed it. Roast butternut squash is lovely made into soup, with various things; peel and de-seed it, cut into chunks, and roast with garlic and sage and salt and pepper and olive oil until tender.
Separately, fry off some onion plus whatever other stuff you want (carrot is good; celery works but can overpower it if you use too much; a bit of apple works surprisingly well; pepper would probably be good) until the onion is transparent. Add the squash and some stock, simmer until everything is cooked, blend, check the seasoning, eat. Dead easy, extremely yummy.

That sounds excellent. And any more soup recipes that you might have...

I also think that your sweet potato and chickpea curry sounds like it might have potential - after all, I can always blend the chickpeas if they're being awkward (realistically I might just blend Peta's half...)

Oh, and if you want something a bit more summey, guacamole might be a good thing to make; very very finely chop (or food-process) some red onion, some tomato, a little fresh chilli, and a couple of leaves of fresh coriander (it can be overpowering, so don't overdo it!). Mix up with some lime juice, and let atand for a little while, so that the flavours all get jiggy together. (Honestly, the guy who taught me this said exactly that ( ... )

That should say "summery", not "summey"!

And you're sure he was definitely talking about the guacamole, right? ;-)

Again, much obliged!

Aw baby, "brunch" makes it sound like more that it was - it was only toast! (I know my post-general anaesthetic said to be careful working electrical appliances, but I could still wield a toaster!). And it was the least I could do after all the running around you'd done in the heat that morning.

You could maybe try some "super-noodles" or equivalent. You know, the lump of noodles you boil for 3 minutes in water you've previously emptied a powdered sauce sachet into?
You can cook them a little longer and they become very squishy.
