Book One Done!

Jul 29, 2005 12:10

I finished the first Harry Potter book last night. It was great because I haven't watched the movie in a few years so I had forgotten the plot twists and what not. I have "Chamber of Secrets" set next to my bed to start reading next week.

It's quite clear to me right now what will happen to some characters, if the archetypes that Rowling has set up are indeed the same as they shadow. So I'm going to give a little character analogy based on the three movies and first book, as that's all the knowledge I have of Harry Potter. These characters actually match up with the Star Wars and some Lord of the Rings characters quite well. Check it out...

Please don't correct me if what I'm saying is revealed as right or wrong within the next five books. I still want to find out on my own.

Harry Potter is obliviously the hero. He's the central character who never knew who he was destined to be until he was contacted by Hogwarts. He has tremendous power within him and he has only to realize these powers before he exacts his revenge on the evil Lord Voldemort, who he may have a connection with besides him having killed his parents. He can be compared to Luke Skywalker and Frodo Baggins. Luke wants to avenge his parent's death by defeating Darth Vader, who actually ends up being his father. So Luke must defeat the Emperor to avenge his father's turn to the Dark Side. Frodo's wound hurting by the Eye of Sauron is very similar to Harry's head scar hurting from Voldemort.

Ron Weasley is the sidekick and also a hero on his own. He's can be a voice of reason for the hero but also do things in a way that the hero might never do. He can be compared to Han Solo or Samwise Gamgee. Han Solo is arrogant and brave and Ron actually seems the reverse of that. But he may grow into someone who saves Harry, like Sam saves Frodo and makes sure he completes his destiny without veering off course.

Hermione Granger is the female accomplice who is different from the hero and sidekick (her parents are Muggles). She's brighter than them and has an special frustration with the sidekick (Ron), which will eventually grow into being enamoured with him. This relationship can be compared to Princess Leia and Han Solo, who frustrate each other in Episode IV, but love each other by Episode V.

Albus Dumbledore is the wise old man who has seen everything. He teaches Harry more than anyone else can and has a better understanding of the Potter family history and he is one of the most powerful wizards around. He can be compared to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda (from Episodes IV-VI) and Gandalf. In both Star Wars and LotR, the wise old men lose their lives before the hero reaches his fate (although Gandalf returns in a new form), so I'm thinking Dumbledore will reach the same fate fighting Voldemort, since only Harry has the power to defeat him.

That's all I have time to analyse right now. Great writing.

Takin' care,
Neil
