I started very late in the pleasure of reading. I was in grade 8 when I was obblied to read (but also to write, and that I loved). So I started with the classics for a 14 year old boy: Sherlock Holmes.
In grade 10 the first big book came, more than 500 pages and the most boring 100 initial pages of ever in a book. It took me as much to read the first 100 as to read the rest of the book. At the same time a cousin gave me a great book, the one that made of me a fan of Luis Sepulveda (I just need to buy 2 or 3 more books of him to have them all).
After that I started to love reading, and since dad has a great collection of books back home I went from Hemingway through Erico Verissimo, ending again in the books I bought with a few months savings.
On my way here I stayed 6 hours in London so I had a lot of time to read and write and, most of all, spend the extra pounds I had left. So I decided to buy some books, not in my native language but in english: The DaVinci's code was one, another really dark novel that I could never read more than 5 minutes and The life and Death of Charlie St. Cloud, by Ben Sherwood. And now I'm a fan of Ben too. And I like his writing so much that after finishing the book I had to bought his first one: The man that ate the 747 - a beautiful love story, just like the previous book.
But Ben has no more books and yesterday I finished the last one, so I was in true need of a book.
Boxing week is always a good time to by some books.
It was a hard task. I like to go shopping, but I like thing to jump out right in front of me. Things pick me!
And the book laying in my bedside table right now jumped into my eyes. It's the latest by Frank McCourt (author of wonderful books like Angela's ashes and 'Tis). It's called Teacher Man and is the latest update of his life as a teacher in NY.
Another amazing writer, a true story teller with a special note: he tells his own story!
All the writer I just mentioned are part of my top 5 favorite writers. What's yours?
