Tough Little Boys

Small children are incredibly resilient. I was holding my youngest daughter, while sitting on the floor, when my son ran full speed into my elbow, mouth first while I was turning toward him-- so there was momentum from both sides; there was a rather icky sensation in my elbow like I had knocked out his teeth, where you feel something give when it comes into contact with you-- those of you who have knocked out the teeth of siblings know that sensation, I'd wager. I'd have bet anything that I'd really hurt him.

Well, needless to say, I was absolutely horrified, and my son was crying from the shock of being scooped up so fast by Dad, and from the unexpected pop in the mouth. It wasn't but a moment before blood started coming out of his mouth, and I had to wrestle with him to get a look.

I'd hit him right square in the front two teeth with the point of my elbow; the blood was flowing pretty freely --I cringed, braced his head in my arm, and tried to see if they were loose-- nary a small wiggle.

He hopped up, gave me a hug, ran off a few feet, turned to me with a little boy grin-- teeth coated in his own blood-- and ran off.

Twenty seconds later, he was making sucking sounds; thinking I missed something, I went and poked around in his mouth, which was now blood free. Apparently, he was just cleaning things off. That's a a tough little boy.
