Today is America's birthday. The sign on Family Video says so. I ate barbeque, which I do every week, and took a long walk around my neighborhood, which I do every night, but this time there were fireworks. And when I had to go to work it was time and a half pay.
Saturday was James' birthday. I bought him an art nouveau Deadpool shirt from Think Geek. We spent the day at Tim's eating sandwiches and playing video games and watching Dr. Horrible and MST3K on Netflix. James' friends were throwing him a surprise party at Mary Beth's and he let me come along. They blindfolded him and and stuck him in her room while the rest of us decorated and blew up dozens of balloons. They got him a cookie cake with "Happy Birthday James, We're Disappointed In You" and pictures of bees on it. And silly cards. He enjoyed it all when they let him out of the room. We watched Clockstoppers, because that was one of James' favorites when he was a kid, followed by the classic Good Burger. We ordered pizza and wrote "sing Happy Birthday to James" in the online ordering instruction box. So when the pizza arrived and James opened the door, the delivery man (an old black man with dreds and a beard and who drove up in one of those giant white vans) sang his own version of the Happy Birthday song, and then we popped a balloon that had the cash in it and handed it to the man. Later, someone built a fort in Mary Beth's room, and a bunch of us crawled in there with pillows and blankets. We didn't leave until 4 AM. I don't like staying out that late, but it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I don't think any of my birthdays are ever going to be that awesome.
