So, I saw Twilight on Sunday.
I think the best word to describe it would be "awkward".
Let me get this straight: it wasn't bad, just awkward.
There's a lot of... looking. It's really hard to describe. Think an episode of The Office, but unintentionally funny. Lots of glaring and weird random closeups. A few odd line reads.
Edward isn't as smooth and gentlemanly as he is in the book. He's as uncomfortable as any other teenage boy. He and Bella don't have as much chemistry as they do on the page.
The cinematography is really bizarre. Close-ups and cuts and effects. Some scenes look like old European music videos. (Some other scenes are really pretty, particularly the landscape shots of Forks.)
It's a pretty "WTF?" movie.
Other notes...
The music's pretty. I'm putting the soundtrack on my Christmas list. (I also want Alice's necklace.)
They expanded the Forks High cast. Lots of Mike, Eric, Jessica, Angela, and Tyler. And the Bio teachers. Jessica was pretty close to the books, although I think she was supposed to have curly hair. Mike was great. I've always liked Mike, or more specifically, making fun of Mike. Eric runs the school paper and wears ties to school. Angela is his photographer, and apparently has a crush on him. (I hope they put in her relationship with Ben in the later movies. The little scenes they got in the book were sweet.) They cut Lauren out, but she never did a lot anyway. I always like details on peripheral characters, so the character development in these guys was neat.
Parallel to that, we didn't get as much Cullen as we did in the books. I know more of them is coming, so it didn't bother me so much.
Jasper keeps making weird faces. I guess they are his "OMG HUMANS TOO CLOSE RESISTING URGE TO BITE" faces. He is a relatively new vegetarian. Although, at the scene at the end where James bit Bella, Jasper doesn't go anywhere near her. I guess ripping up James and setting him on fire seems more appealing to him?
They made the Cullens really pale. Good job. Although sometimes it looked like they just put the makeup on the faces and not on the ears and neck so much.
Yes, I swooned when we first saw Carlisle.
There was more Renee than in the books, and we even got a brief shot of Phil! He looks like a normal guy, a little younger than I expected.
There was more Jacob that there was in the book, which was a good move. He's a major player in the second book, but wasn't in the first one so much, so I think this well help viewers transition better. The wig looked a little awkward at times, but I liked him.
I LOVE CHARLIE AND BILLY. I love Charlie in any form, but I especially love him with some Billy on the side. That fight they had at the beginning? Yay!
They did a fab job on Bella's truck. Seriously, Charlie, Billy, Mike, and Bella's truck are my favorite characters.
No blood typing lab? Awww. And where did that field trip come from?
The baseball game was... wow. It was awesome and cheesy at the same time. They did make the Cullens really graceful, and I thought the scene where the trio walks up in slow mo was pretty cool.
There was no Harry Potter trailer. That made me sad. I've
already seen it, but I really wanted to see it on the big screen. All we got preivews for were chick flicks, a Wayans Brothers film, and the Heroes-esque Push.
In closing, a cracktastic, mostly loyal adaptation of the books. If you like them, chances are you'll like the movie. If you haven't read the books, the movie's still good for some laughs. I won't say the book was better overall, but it's better in a few respects. I'll say that Edward, Bella, and the Cullens are better in the book, but everyone else (James, Victoria, Laurent, Charlie, Billy, Jacob, Renee, the Forks High Cast) is just as good or better in the movie.
I got to hang out with Ashley (and her sister), see Molly again for the first time in forever, and meet her boyfriend Patrick. He was cool. We walked around for a bit afterwards, hit the Hot Topic and Borders and this Asian Gifts store. Only place I've seen where you can buy ninja stars.
