What did y'all hug a dead guy for?

Last night/this morning I went with mom and Jimmy to Can't Stop the Serenity, a midnight showing of Serenity to support Equality Now, charity to end discrimination and violence against women in third world countries. You really can't pick a better movie-- the women are pretty and strong and kick ass.

I didn't have a costume, only my Serenity t-shirt and my dionsaur earrings. I was very proud of them, though. (Jim just put on his brown derby hat and went as a very lazy Badger.) There were other people in costumes, very impressive ones. I took pictures, but I don't know where the camera cord is, so I'll upload them later. My favorites were Inara in her Train Job costume (very realistic!) and guy that looked so much like Wash it was eerie. I have a picture of him playing with my dinosaur earrings, and I got to hug him. There were raffles and silent auctions, but we didn't enter those. Our movie tickets doubled as raffle tickets, and I didn't put them in, in case they had to be checked or whatever. I won two little gift bags in the trivia contest. They were mostly flyers and biz cards for vendors, but I did get some Equality Now bracelets, a Serenity sudoku card, and a little bag of M&Ms in a Fruity Oaty Bar envelope. It was at some little dollar theatre, and there was a great atmosphere and a very nice set up. I'm totally going next year, and in costume too.

The movie actually started at about 12:30, and I stayed awake the entire time! I have history of falling asleep during Serenity-- I think that was only the second time I've seen it all the way through at once. The first couple times I tried to watch it, I would be asleep by the time Book was dead.

I've seen Serenity before and it's still one of my favorites, but I can't fully enjoy it. I know that the death scenes are coming, and I spend the film with this sense of dread, which then turns to despair. I'm really attached to the characters, so it's a heavy experience for me. There are points where my brain is screaming "No! No, stop it!" when the sad things happen. The deaths, people's reactions to the deaths, are truly heartbreaking and painful. But I still recommend this movie. It's amazing, the characters, dialogue, music, cinematography, costumes. Very high quality, and it is really funny in parts, and a fun adventure. Normal people will have a good time, I'm just super-emotional and haven't accepted the deaths yet. :)

out and about, firefly, geekery, movies, sad things
