Books & TV

I'm reading the craziest book ever. It's called "Someone Comes To Town, Someone Leaves Town" by Cory Doctorow, and it's about a guy that's named Alan. He's an entrepaneur and jack-of-all-trades and has a dream to get free wireless internet for all of Toronto. He also wants to write a story, and buys a fixer-upper house in a bohemian neighborhood to write in. Amoung his neighbors is a young, nameless woman (whom Alan dubs Mimi) that has wings growing out of her back. That isn't the weird part. Alan's father is a mountain, and his mother is a washing machine. His brothers include a fortune teller, an island, three nesting dolls, and a living corpse. Insane. What's interesting about the book is how the names change. Alan's mother could never remember his name, so he pretty much answers to anything starting with A. The same for his brothers--Davey turns to Danny, Carlos and Charlie are interchangeable. (The brothers' names go alphabetically by age, down to G.) Alan introduces himself to Mimi as Alan, but he's Andy or Adam to her roomates. It's an incredibly original story, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I might put it on hold once I get my hands on a copy of Twilight, though.

There's a Best TV Character bracket going on for some newspaper website. Some of them are easy (Barney Stinston vs. Walter White), some are hard (The Devil vs. Perry Cox), and some matchups just seem completely random. Jack Harkness vs. Herbert, the old man from Family Guy? The sad thing is, Herbert is winning, if only by a margin of about a point and a half.

Bones was good. Booth and Brennan were cute together, as always. And Brennan's dad is a free man! No death row for him! House was also good; I particularly enjoyed the Wilson storyline. I had no idea his life-long dream was to own a waterbed. And I laughed unnecessarily loud at this joke...
House: Hello, I'm Dr. House.
Doctor: I've heard your name before.
House: Most people have. It's also a noun.
