Guess what's cooking?

The weather is crisp and the there is a serious bite in the air. The leaves are passed the glorious stage and moving on to leather brown and rich golds. And the apple tree is finally all harvested.

Our apple tree was loaded and ready to break. Huge amounts of apples hanging in clusters and bending branches to the ground. A bushel or more on the ground, feeding the chipmunks and the whistlepig, an old name for a Ground Hog. Mount Savage even has a Whistlepig Lane. So it was high time for harvesting last week. We have two apple trees on the property, but one took a big hit from a falling tree during it's flowering period and it shocked it out of bear. So only the one has fruit, which is just fine as we are having trouble getting all those processed.

And when it was all over, we had over two bushels off the one tree. What a lot of apples. And no, I am not giving Jared a karate chop...well maybe a friendly one.

We're glad we got them in when we did. The light frosts of last week put the crisp and sugar into them and they are delicious! Which is just right, as they are Red Delicious Apples. We will pull out all the good eating ones, and process the rest. Slicing and drying, perhaps some hot water bath canning, but mostly...Apple Sauce. Vats and vats of it. The house smells of apples and the freezer is filling up with containers full of the stuff. Here is some cooking on the stove.

Mmmmmm.......

It is a good thing we harvested when we did. We woke up yesterday morning to 3 inches of light and fluffy snow. Here is a cardinal through a frosty window, perched in our roses.

The picture is huge, so I have re-sized it for here, but if you right click on it and hit view image, you can then use it for a desktop. The snow melted off during the day, despite the fact that it fell in big flakes and little all day. The ground was warm enough that it didn't stick, which is a good thing, as it would have added up to a good 6-8 inches. As it is, it cleared over night and we woke to just as dusting and now the sky is bright and sunny and we're on the way to a Halloween of 60's, just right for fun.

Kubiando!
