Birds of a Feather

The best thing about having a roommate like Liz was that you knew all sorts of things about what went on at school, especially birthdays as her loving friend always did her best to give others the absolute perfect gift. As she walked up the stairs to the third floor, Kate grinned as she silently corrected herself. That wasn't the best thing about ( Read more... )

There were times Dayenne spent in Soulfire's room, there were times she spent on the field or in class teaching, there were times she went out to hunt with Edan... and there were times where she had to plan out the lessons or correct essays and other things from her students.

At the moment, she was doing that last part, the vital part of being a good teacher. A good teacher always prepared their lessons, though preparing lessons took time. Though the knock provided the distraction she needed at the moment. Working behind a desk to scribble out notes on paper gave her a headache. And maybe Soulfire had returned from her 'shopping'. The witch had promised a special night tonight, and that alone was the reason Dayenne knew another year had passed and today was her birthday.

Dayenne had to admit; she felt a disappointed for a moment when her eyes fell on Katelyn instead of Soulfire. But it wasn't shown on her face and Dayenne was old enough to hide the disappointment as well. She smiled down at her student who had a gift for her one subject, but was terrible at the other.

"Katelyn. Good afternoon. Can I help you with something?"

"Nu-huh," she girl said as she shook her head slightly. Instead, she smiled brightly at the taller woman. "I'm just glad that you're back now. You and Soulfire, both."

The box was presented to her from behind her back. It was a simple brown box without much decoration, since Katelyn knew Dayenne to be a fairly practical person. "This...it's for you," she said as the gift was handed to the professor. Inside was a handmade necklace of small stones polished to look almost like pearls or small gems, as beautiful as Katelyn could make it despite being made of such natural materials.

It also bore the markings of Druidic magic, something seldom shared with those outside of her order. A pendant hung from the necklace, a small crescent moon etched decoratively onto it's surface. This medallion also radiated a very faint aura, hard to notice except for those already closely attuned to Nature. "I hope...that you like it," the younger girl said quietly as she watched on, hoping that Dayenne would consider it something both pretty and useful.

((OOC: Probably something like Animal Empathy +5, Speak with Animals 1x/day and Charm Animal 1x/day, if you wanted to stat it out.)) ^__^

Dayenne blinked at the box presented to her. She accepted it, though her face revealed her confusion. "I'm touched that you're happy about me and Soulfire being back," she said puzzled, "but you really didn't have to get us a 'welcome back' gift, you know." She then gave Kate a smile to show her she was still happy with the present, even though in her mind it was absolutely unnecessary.

"But thank you. I'm curious to what is inside." Dayenne opened the box to see the real gift Katelyn had given her. She stared at the beauty lying in the simple box, speechless for a long time.

"Thank you," she finally said in an awed voice. "That is... you really didn't have to do that, you know..."

OOC: So... an amulet with things she can already more or less do in her ranger-way? =P It might not be magical, and she cannot really talk to animals, but she and animals can understand each other, so... ^^;

Kate's own uncertain look saddened for a moment. She probably should have gotten both of them a welcome back present, but she hadn't thought of that. At least they weren't expecting that, Kate reminded herself to lift her spirits, telling herself that they would not be disappointed in her.

"I got it for you," she explained, "because it's your birthday. Right? Or..." Once again, doubt began to creep into her mind. "Did I get it wrong?"

((OOC: Well, to do those same things better. Plus I suppose she could use those spells on someone else if she needed, like Kate's doing with Liz in the other thread?

The necklace itself was the main gift, really. But to keep the same thing from happening here as what happened with Rei on Laurian's birthday Kate put her own special touches on it.))

"No, no it's..." Dayenne tore her eyes away from the necklace to look at Katelyn. "It's beautiful. I didn't know that anyone here knew about my birthday, though. I mean, if it hadn't been for Soulfire I wouldn't even know it was my birthday again."

She smiled again and it seemed to be an almost hesitant smile, oddly out of place for someone always in command and always demanding respect. "I'm sure it'll look great on some of the dresses I have."

Kate's confidence began to return. "I'm glad, that you like it," she happily replied.

"I...wasn't sure if it was today or not," the schoolgirl continued. "But that's what I heard. And, I wanted to make something nice for you if it was. Because birthdays should be really, really special."

Dayenne smiled. "I have never really paid much attention to birthdays," she said in all honesty. "Maybe that's because I do not know my real birthday." Lowering her eyes for a moment to look at the special jewel in the box she was holding, the ranger explained, "My parents died when I was only a baby. They were attacked and killed. A ranger happened to in the vicinity and he could save me before the vampire would kill me as well. He could roughly estimate how old I was, but I don't know my real birthday. And maybe you have noticed it yourself as well when you lived in the tropical forests. If you're out of touch from civilisation long enough, all that's going to matter are the seasons, not the days itself."

She looked up again. "But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate this gift. I promise you, I'll treasure it. Thanks."
