Suzanne is dropping me off at the airport next Thursday morning. I will be staying with Jenni and Antonio at their house on base and meeting my new niece, Vivian, for the first time. A weekend seemed too short and a week, too long - this seems just right. And I'll be back in time to catch all the inauguration hoopla. Jen says there's not much to do there so I'll be sure to bring along a knitting project and lots of books. The weather is nice enough we can take walks outside (OUTSIDE!) with the stroller and there is also a nearby gym facility. If all else fails, there's always Wal-Mart.

I think it'll be a good visit. We've all been getting along better this past year or so. Maybe everyone has finally grown up now that we're all in our 30s (though not for long!). I plan to be on good behavior and keep things light.

Today is David Bowie's 62nd birthday and my mom's 60th. Had Elvis not left the building, he'd be 74. Mr. Bowie had a previous engagement so I'm settling on taking my mom to the California Pizza Kitchen this Sunday afternoon. So far all I've gotten her is the book about Dewey, the Library Cat, but what she really needs is a cell phone or a AAA membership. We'll have to discuss that.

Funny story of the week:

I remember buying my favorite winter coat at Dillard's but it's so old, I couldn't tell you when. Had it dry cleaned at the start of the season and while it looks nice on the outside, the inside lining is starting to rip and shred beyond repair and the hole in the right pocket that Ann fixed last winter has reappeared. Looks like I'm in the market for a new coat, I thought on Monday and began checking the ads for clearance specials. Next day Ann comes to work carrying a men's small black pea coat that she found in a Von Maur shopping bag in the dumpster of her Bellevue apartment building. The brand is Merona which is Target but it's still high quality and very obviously never been worn. Even the pockets were still sewn shut. "Do you want it?" she asks. Is it David Bowie's 62nd birthday? YES! We were trying to speculate where it might have come from. Maybe it was a gift from some hippie's grandma? Maybe it was a gift from someone's girlfriend and they broke up the next day? Maybe it was worn once while committing a crime? Stolen? My mom would probably say (and will on Sunday) that it was a gift from God. Whatever the case, I love my dumpster coat!!
