Spare time to write in LJ is becoming a luxury. Friday night after work we spent an hour at the pool, grilled hamburgers and played with Megan before turning in early to read. Sounds boring but it was definitely the most relaxing day of the weekend.
An eye appt forced me to go to the Farmer's Market extra early which is just as well with the recent bout of heat. To say it's hot would be an understatement. Of course, this is the time every year that the air conditioner chooses run out of freon. It was 82 degrees in the house at 10pm last night.
You know you're getting old when ...
Jake, the son of a friend, was only 8 years old at our wedding; Saturday we attended his. Both 23, he and his new wife Becky, have been together for 6 years, starting as high school sweethearts. She just graduated from nursing school and he is currently studying to be a minister. Their wedding was pretty traditional with a few unique twists. The ring bearers walked up the aisle dressed as two little secret agents to everyone's amusement and after the ceremony, the couple walked back down the aisle to Ray Charles' "Hallelujah, I Love Her So". This was followed by three songs accompanied by a highly sentimental montage of projected photos: her growing up, him growing up and them together. The reception was alcohol-free and it was nice to see people actually having fun without it for a change. Yes, this is ME saying this. More than anything, I really got the sense that this was a young couple truly in love who were meant for each other.
At 7am Sunday morning, it was already crazy humid but we figured it was the pound dogs best chance that day to get outside. Longtimers Tyler, Lola and Chunks finally got adopted to the collective relief of everyone. My favorite guy for the second week in a row was a 1½ year old red heeler named
Sonny who spent most of his life in a Missouri backyard. The tips of his ears have almost no fur left on them but he's a big, big love with a lotta personality! Partway through our walking circuit, he came to a dead stop under a tree and looked up with a big, slobbery smile at a baby squirrel eating mulberries. Later I had a hard time getting him to leave my lap and go back to his kennel. As always, I wish that I could take them all home.
Appropriate songs noticed: The Animals' hit "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" (doubly so!) and "Move It On Over" as sung by George Thorogood (originally written by Hank Williams). Move over nice dog - a mean, old dog is movin' in ...
The afternoon was Shannon's bridal shower at
CappuGino's in the Old Market. Cute little place that may well become a regular pit stop. The tea party theme was fun though I underestimated the formality a little by wearing my favorite sundress, flip flops and pigtails (see SAF2006) instead of a hat, heels and gloves. It's hotter than hell outside and I wasn't sure if the place had air conditioning so whattdaya expect? Anyway, all was fine and great to see Shannon so happy.
I feel like this is turning into a diary more in the British sense of the word than the American but here's a glance at the week ahead in case I don't get back here anytime soon:

- Tuesday ~ day off, out with Sandy, dog training class
- Wednesday ~ day off!
