It was a doog day and a good dog day, too. I know I say it every year, but with Summer Arts Festival being one of my favorite events, this is the best weekend to be in Omaha, so much so that I took the day off work.
After sleeping in til a whopping 6:45am, I went on a bike ride along the riverfront, walked the little girl, took a long hot bath and uploaded the iPod with more tunes (just over 2700 songs and I'm still not done ...).
One of the benefits of having a little dog is being able to take her places so when Bruce got off work at noon, we headed down to the Summer Arts Festival. Friday afternoon is the perfect day to go with the crowds being a fraction of what they will be the rest of the weekend. And wouldn't you know that Megan is a little attention hound? Everywhere we went people stopped to talk or wanting to pet her. In that way, we were able to meet a lot of the artists including Doug Gibson of Manitoba from whom Elaine and Russ bought my beautiful birthday present at an art fair in Vancouver last winter. Small world!
Having most everything I could possibly want or need for myself, I took the opportunity to buy a few gifts. Lily and Emma will each be receiving a unique
coloring book for their upcoming birthdays, Ava and Lily will be receiving a tiny heart shaped glass box the perfect size for missing teeth, and Patty gets a bracelet for her 50th birthday. Other artists of particular interest were Peggy Corpeny of
Heart Bow Studio and
Lee Rentz Photography.

a couple of years ago but he seems shy, usually hiding out in the back of his stall. Perhaps the most interesting couple was Jill & Steve Flinn of Glasgow, MO whose business card I've misplaced at present. Their art is all about rescue animals and I appreciated all the personal symbolism contained therein they took the time to explain to me. Unfortunately, their work was a little out of my price range but I really enjoyed looking at it while talking with them.
They changed things up this year and unified the main entertainment tent with the beer garden which drew a lot more people. We sat in the back for Sarah Benck due to Megan's sensitive ears and even then she was getting nervous by the end. The tent was obviously the place to be as we ran into Heidi, Julie and a couple Jazz on the Green regulars who we'll be seeing again before too long. Some guy came up to me while Bruce was off getting drinks and said he'd been observing Megan for a while from a distance and thought she was incredibly special - I think so, too.
