Brom, UFCRS, Shootout, Orion, King Arthur, Aussie Bro

Let's see, when my parents were out here, they got me a couple of books as a belated birthday present. They were Anansi Boys, by Gaiman; and Plucker, by Brom. Now, I know Brom as being a fantasy illustrater. He did a lot of stuff for the Dark Sun game, as well as several MTG cards. I've always liked his style and he's gotten better and better through the years.

The Plucker was not only illustrated by Brom, but was also written by him. I would say that The Plucker is very much in the vein of old style fairy tales; good for kids of all ages. It is predictable in parts, but don't let that keep you away from it. The book itself is quite lovely and built to last, I look forward to handing down my copy to future generations.

Did you know there's an Ultimate Fighting Championship Reality Show? It sucks! The guys are in decent shape, but they don't seem to get the principles of fighting. If they get to fight in a UFC match, I see nothing but pain and slow, stupid surprise in their future.

Well, the Boulder Shootout was last weekend and I finally got to be in one of Troy's films. It was a lot of fun; sleep depped, costumed, bloodletting, creek crossing, creeklaying fun. Despite my best efforts to fortify my immune system I have gotten sick. In large part to how little sleep we got as well as laying in the ice cold creek of Boulder Falls fighting then lying dead in it.

It was pretty daunting going to the award ceremony. Only the top 10 films get shown there, and they don't tell you if you should bother showing up before hand. And wow, the Bar at the Shootout has raised considerably since last year, however we did make it to the Top 10 and we won the award for Best Soundtrack.

I think our ambitious project (samurai action drama) landed us in the Top 10; but our inability to realize that ambition kept us from best picture. Next year, though...

Reread Masamune Shiro's Orion, a retelling of part of the legend of Susano-O. Damn that's a good book. I'm kinda sad that Shiro doesn't do more good stories with great art and compelling characters. He used to do it all the time. I think doing cheesecake pinups spoiled him.

Rented and watched that King Arthur movie with Clive Owen and Kiera Knightley. You know, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, I'll probably wind up buying it. I was very happy that it went from a PG-13 theatrical release to an R for the dvd. Pretty good fighting and I've gained some respect for Kiera Knightley.

Mikhael is in town! m'Lady and I picked him up from DIA this morning at 3am. It's good to see him. We'll bring him around and introduce him to those that we see.

ciao!
