Good news. Bad news. Blah news.

So first with the bad news.
Last week the end of the power cord for my MacBook Pro started to smoke. A few minutes later, the plastic was melted, the whole end was charred, and I'm sure I don't have to say it didn't work after that. Apparently this is a common problem with these Magsafe plugs.
So, I went to the computer shop down the street to see how much a new cord would be, but before I went I checked online to see how much it would be in the US. $79. Expensive. Well, at the store they tried to sell it to me for 1,320 yuan which is about $170 and a little bit more than 1/3 of what I earn in a month. So yeah, fuck that.

The good news...
is that it's all been covered by the warranty, I got a replacement cord for free, and now my laptop is back in action. Although, it was a bit of a trip to find the Apple Authorized Service Center here in Nanjing. It was on some side street, in a large building set off from the street, inside an entrance behind a coffee shop, on the 13th floor of the building, and in a small and nondescript corner office.

The blah news is that I'm back at work and it's just going so so. This week I'm teaching kids about... death. Don't ask me how I got on that topic. I don't really know myself. In my defense, they didn't know the word "funeral", which is pretty important to know, right?

And at school lunch today I had the options of both stinky tofu AND congealed duck blood. At this point I'm used to the blood but the tofu, which is aged and fermented, is really quite stinky. In my honest and humble opinion, its smell is reminiscent of, well... shit. It tastes A LOT better than it smells, but in the small teachers' canteen the aroma wasn't very appetizing. I opted for the braised beef and potatoes.

All in all, things are going just fine.
