Yay for not having uni :o)
Diary: Week of 04/06: Dickens, Pubs, clubs and tent parties
So no more university. Still waking up with feeling the need to be actively doing some kind of work. In fact, the realisation that soon I'll need to be looking for a job (once my results comes in) makes me feel almost pressured to have lots of fun with the results coming in as the deadline for when the fun has to be done by. :o/
Been reading Oliver Twist this week, haven't finished yet. I've never read any Charles Dickens before, so I didn't know quite was to expect, but found myself surprised. The language can be obtuse at times, although I'm not sure if that's just his style or deliberately pompous given how dryly satirical it is most of the time. It's fairly easy to adjust to however (after being able to adjust to Feersume Endjinn by Iain. M. Banks I think I'm prepared for anything now)
Has been fun, although I've yet to bump across much new that I haven't seen in dramatisations of the book, although reading the source material is certainly fun. The one thing I didn't expect was how much importance is given to the fact Fagin is a Jew. It's something I never picked up from the dramatisations but in retrospect I can see how the dramatisations I've seen do indeed try to stick to that sort of archetype through the facial structure of the actors.
Seriously though, Dickens almost always refers to Fagin as 'The Jew'. With anyone else Dicken's uses their names as soon as their names has been introduced, but with Fagin he is just 'The Jew'. The archetype of the Old hideous amoral Jew is quick to imprint itself onto my mind though, partly because I'm quite aware of the sort of social stigma Jews have carried through the ages, and partly because it's been brought to life in the Oliver Twist films already and it just needed 'Jew' affixed to it. Is quite odd to see this perception of Jews preserved in the book.
I've also been working on and off on my webpage (linky) but I haven't done much yet. Will be playing around with the gallery section for a bit longer, then uploading (and writing) articles so that it won't be too dissimilar to my old website, just newer and better :o)
Monday I was down at The Crown (nearby the uni campuses) with some other graduates, which was fun. Wednesday I was house-sitting for angryangeltoo whilst she had someone around to fix the boiler, which was okay because I had Oliver Twist with me (although her copy of Minesweeper now has High Scores...) :o) Thursday I took a visit to Dungeon, which had a typically small turn-out, but I knew the vast majority of the people there which is what counts (better a smaller crowd of familiar faces than a swarm of strangers). Was an okay night out, with good music, although I did manage to find myself playing relationship councillor I think they may have sorted themselves out now :o)
Saturday I got the train up to Hayes in Outer London for a 'tent party' in a friend's back garden, which involved me drinking too much wine and becoming increasingly drunk through the night. Waking up in a very hot tent in the morning with something of a hangover is hell by the way :o) Spent most of the Sunday watching television with the host, so was all good though :o)
