Program: Photoshop CS4

Steps: 6
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
Step #1
Find a picture and resize, crop, sharpen, etc. I used
this image from
here.
I cropped it to 100x100 and I didn't sharpen it, but feel free to if your icon needs it.
Step #2
Duplicate your base (ctrl-J) and drag it to the top.
Set this layer to SCREEN, opacity 100%.
Merge the two layers (ctrl-e) because you will need to use them together later.
Step #3
Create a new Selective Coloring layer, Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Selective Color.
Use these settings:
Reds: -100/-17/+100/0
Yellows: -100/-100/+100/0
Neutrals: -31/-1/-9/-3
Set this layer to NORMAL, opacity 100%.
Step #4
Create a new Color Balance layer, Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Color Balance.
Use these settings:
Midtones: -78/+17/+24
Shadows: +23/-10/+33
Highlights: +10/-1/-10
Set this layer to NORMAL, opacity 100%.

Use these settings:
Reds: -100/0/+100/0
Yellows: +100/0/-100/0
Neutrals: +100/+5/-5/-3
Set this layer to NORMAL, opacity 100%.
