Energy Efficiency

So, I've always been interested in how to conserve energy without having to make myself too crazy. I try to turn off lights when not needed, have my main entertainment electronics on a smart power strip, keep my heat turned down when possible, etc. I've been fixing the weatherstripping at my new place, and installed some foam insulators around my electrical outlets and switches that are on exterior walls. I hope to have a hot water heater timer installed soon.

One of the things I probably won't be able to do is install more/better insulation. Condo living does have its limitations, and I don't have access to my "attic" area. But if you are a Connecticut resident and DO have access to your own insulations spaces, you may want to consider beefing it up if you need to. According to this article on Slate.com, the state offers a rebate for insulation upgrade, and there is a tax credit, too. (Not to mention the proposed "Cash for Caulkers" program).

Also, there is a coupon (pdf) for energy audits. Normally, they cost $75 but with this coupon during the month of March, you can get it done for $25, and receive up to $700 worth of improvements and services. I was told by a friend that you don't need to have the audit happen by the end of March, just scheduled, but I'm not certain of that.

Just thought I'd pass this information along!
