Elaine could only think of one explanation for what had just happened. One minute, she had been in Los Angeles, on her way to meet with wizard Carlos Ramirez to discus a missing person's case, and the next she was somewhere else entirely. It had happened as easily as walking from one room into the next--if by easy, you meant being sucked into a vacuous, crushing void, and then expelled in a manner that felt like a cross between ripping open a Way into the Nevernever and what she imagined being squeezed out of a birth canal might feel like.

She sputtered, startling at the sound of dry dirt crunching beneath her feet as she dropped her weight into a defensive stance--alert, on guard, and all but spooking at her own shadow. She had to force herself to stop, draw a deep, grounding breath, and take stock of her surroundings while she had the chance.

A baseball diamond? That was odd. She didn't recall passing through Faerie before emerging here, and she couldn't imagine that the fae would have a baseball diamond anywhere in their realm. Faeries weren't big on mortal sporting events. The graffiti on the stadium walls was even stranger, but at least it told her where she was. 'Welcome to Siren's Port.' Wherever that was. 'Good Luck with the Darkness.'

She was still reading the signs when she noticed that it was growing dusky, but she didn't think much of it until the sound of sirens split the air, amplifying the whine of her already ringing ears and increasing her headache tenfold. She was suddenly aware that it was getting very dark, very fast, and she could just barely make out the words You're Screwed, Newmeat.

Her first instinct was to try and rip open a Way back, but to no avail. "Stars and stones," she cursed under her breath as she took off at a run. "I am screwed!"
