Far very far from here, some 2000 miles away

NEWS FROM THE FRONT:

So woke up at 6am and washed baby bottles cause Brie acts likes it's DOOM and Jay got me new gloves, which are bright yellow and make me feel all Mad Scientist/ Dexter's mum.

Slept like the dead yesterday (these days) and so only just watched the "Glee" episode, cause I was kinda spooked by the whole Paltrow thing cause I've held an irrational grudge against her since she won the Oscar for Best Actress for fucking SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE - which was a terrible movie! And to make it worse she won against Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Elizabeth!!! WHICH WAS AN EPIC MOVIE/ PERFORMANCE. And I lost faith in the Oscars that year ::crazy::

SO ANYWAY - It was like my favourite Glee episode of the SEASON! It was fantastic, and the songs kicked ass. And there were many lulz....and omg Kurt might be in liking that bully who kissed him - and has threatened to END him.

Yes, AWESOME EPISODE. Which is somewhat a mystery since they did an episode dedicated to Rocky Horror - BUT I REFUSE TO TALK ABOUT SUCH EVIL THINGS. The only saving grace of that episode being John Stamos doing Eddie's (Meatloaf's) number.

BOOKS: THE HUNGER GAMES (TRILOGY) BY SUZANNE COLLINS

Deleted intial review cause it was all TL;DR so let's see if I can do better this time around.

The Hunger Games are like a cross between 1984 and Survivor, with a dash of the Olympics. It's tragic, funny, depressing and wonderful all at the same time.

In Book 1 (The Hunger Games) we are introduced to the country of Panem and their tradition of having an annual Hunger Games - a only-one-will-survive DEATHMATCH with tributes (ages 12-18) from each District. Excluding The Capitol each of the 12 Districts have a lottery to choose one girl and one boy to participate. Some Districts are richer than others and are able to train their tributes, called Careers. District 12 is one of the poorer Districts responsible for coal mining.

The main protagonist is Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to replace her 12 year old sister Prim (Primrose). Along with the boy from her District; Peeta Mellark we follow them on their journey to the Capitol and their experience of the games. The horror of the Hunger games is not just the death of children from each District but the way that the games are presented as a televised event, with costumes and themes and betting. 'Tributes' are encouraged to have personality. Katniss is about as personable as a slug (actual quote from book, lol), Peeta however is extremely likeable and present himself and Katniss as a couple in star-crossed love, which the audience eats up. Seeing it as beneficial to her surviving , Katniss agrees to this ruse for the audience. In defiance of the Capitol Katniss and Peeta survive the Arena and win the Games, the first time two victors have been allowed.

Book 2 (Catching Fire) catches up with Katniss, District 12, and the 75th Hunger Games which is a special event called a Quarter Quell and only occurs once every 25 years. Because of Katniss' and Peeta's defiant actions in the last games they have become the representation of the growing animosity in each of the districts. They have become the catalyst for a REVOLUTION. Incensed, the Capitol manipulate the games to land them both in the Arena again. Against other previous victors of the games. This time she and Peeta face off against others who have survived the massacre.
Katniss goes into the Arena with the intention of saving Peeta and he with the intention of saving her. However things don't resolve this way and the Games are interrupted by the intervention of the rebel forces with the aid of the supposed destroyed District 13. Katniss is saved from the arena and Peeta is left in the hands of the Capitol.

I really appreciate how Collins' handles the romantic elements in the books. Katniss is a normal 16/ 17 year old. Before the games she had given very little thought to relationships, and during the games she was bust trying not to die. So her emotional development is something that happens in real time. Apart from Peeta (who I love cause he's kind and BAKES) competing for her affection she has her best friend Gale (who's all dark and angry and who I wanted to DIAF). Book 3 (Mockingjay) is my favourite of the series because it gives a lot of insight into Katniss emotional development...or rather her complete emotional breakdown, and how she goes on. Peeta is broken beyond repair by the Capitol and Katniss by the events of the Revolutionary War of which she has become the flag-bearer (Mockingjay), she sees her own betrayal by the revolution, and the death of her beloved sister Prim, Katniss faces death in a way she hadn't previously.

In the end the War is won, and when Katniss is given the chance to kill the disposed president, she kills the one who would replace him - who thought it would be a good idea to have a final Hunger Games with the Capitol's children. She learns the terrible truth that change is hard, that there's always going to be someone who thinks having children kill each other is something understandable. A new president is elected. Katniss is released because her lawyers argue she's mental. She survives, Peeta survives and together they help each other learn to live again.

I won't pretend and say I didn't want Katniss and Peeta to end up together, but by the end they had both lost so much and had become so different from their former selves that it broke my heart more than anything. It was less winning a ship war and more being grateful they could both salvage some tiny hope for the future.

It was truly a tale that was way more than the sum of it's parts.

Still TL;DR, damn. XD But if I deleted this for just lulzy one-liners, I'd feel like I was doing the books a disservice.

Currently reading "House of Leaves" which is like 700+ pages of insane, concentric text and will take me some days (which is shocking for me)

nerdgams, books, glee, the hunger games, bookish thoughts
