I think my house is slowly but surely resetting itself. First there was the issue with my air conditioner. As I mentioned in
this post, I came home on Thursday night and my house was hot - 81 degrees and rising. The A/C was running, but no cold air was coming out. I could definitely tell the difference between my outside unit (with just the fan running) and my neighbor's (with the fan and compressor running).
I was able to get Pro-Air of Tallahassee out to my house on Friday afternoon. While I was waiting I turned the unit back on and to my surprise, cold air started coming out. The repairman opened it up and saw that a couple caps had come loose, which caused the freon leak out and the unit to overheat and shut down. So he filled it back up and put new caps on. Final bill: $140. What a freakin' rip off! But what can you do? They have you over a barrel and they know it. I got charged $30 for the freon and $110 for the "diagnosis." And then the guy tried to sell me some preventative maintenance package - "Normally it's $259, but for you I'll make it $159." My parents have theirs done for $55. >=/ Yeah, I'll get right on that! The good news is that the A/C is working again and it didn't cost me too much. Still...
I went home today to let Phoebe out and check my email. I couldn't connect to Comcast's mail server, and that's when I noticed that my cable modem was completely dark. I unplugged it from the back and plugged it back in... Nothing happened. So after waiting on hold for ten minutes for Comcast technical support, I decided to just unplug the whole thing and take it into their service department. As I was getting into my car, I decided to plug it into the outlet in my garage, just for fun. To my surprise, the modem came to life and the lights started flashing! I guess the AC adapter just needed to be reset. So I hooked it back up and have Internet again. I love easy fixes. :-) And I'm glad I didn't make the trip across town to Comcast! I would have felt pretty dumb if they had plugged it in there and it worked.
All this has me wondering what's going to go next... These things come in threes, you know! What else will I have to "reset?" My fridge? Hot water heater? Multimedia PC? I know it's gonna be something...!
