Goodbye Uncle Jim

Apr 25, 2007 19:55

Everyone has one don't they? An uncle named Jim? Well I got the news today that my uncle Jim died. One of my dad's brothers. He was a quiet, sweet man. Fathered six children, served in the military, I never heard him complain about his lot in life. One of his children has Downs Syndrome and life has dealt him the difficult blows that it deals us all in different ways.

My dad has lived on uncle Jim's farm for several years now. They worked together and hung out, dad helped uncle Jim do lots of things. And then this morning, dad went for his usual walk and on returning went into the kitchen in uncle Jim's house to see how he was. Dad said that he saw his brother lying on the floor and walked over to see what was wrong. By this time dad's brother's body was stiff and cold. No one knows when he died, dad said that he thought maybe Jim was getting a drink or something and wasn't feeling well so he laid down and just died. We think it must have been a heart attack.

Dad called my sister Katrina and said that he'd found his brother and didn't know what to do. Kat asked dad if he'd rang 911, dad told her he had, and then he said he didn't know what to do so he covered his brother and put a pillow under his head. I called dad later in the day after I'd gotten the news and he told me that he spoke to his brother and said 'Jim, if I'd been here I would have done anything to help you.' I know that dad loved his brother...I hope my dad knows how much I love him.

Goodbye uncle Jim, you left a good aroma of your soul with those who knew you...
