For all of you who've been itching to slap me for being such a cryptic midwife the last week, you'll find details forthcoming at frzn_mmnt's journal over the next few days as she recovers from her initial sleep deprivation ( Read more... )

That's so fantastic that you were able to help her through this, and what is going on with all these less-than-helpful doctors lately?

I'm not sure about other fields, but obstetrics is definitely becoming a very litigious area ... it's basically a matter of some doctors being more concerned about covering their own arses as opposed to making the most accurate medical/midwifery choice.

Huge kudos is owed to frzn_mmnt for not allowing herself to succumb to the bullying!

That's a real shame :( It's got to be such a stressful time for a family (I'm the the end result is joyful, but the actual giving birth bit sounds stressful to me), doctors more worried about covering their arses is the last thing they need.

If you don't mind, would it be possible to find out what exactly made these doctors so incredibly unhelpful and bullying? -_^?

Heh, yeah definitely a very cherished child.

You'd have to ask them.

My personal feeling was that they were more worried about what could go wrong than what was going right. A midwife approaches pregnancy and birth from the understanding that the vast majority of women have healthy babies and natural births with a minimum of interference if left alone to do their thing.

The medical model is all about "risk minimisation" and "making birth safe." From their point of view, stepping in and "doing something" is the safest option.

That being said, sometimes intervention is warranted - that's why we have it, after all. I just think it's very over-used.

The brilliant thing with frzn_mmnt is that she called the shots on how much intervention she felt was warranted. It takes a lot of courage to do that.
