Brokeback Mountain is so much more than gay cowboys.
There's something about this film - it's so spare and haunting. There's nothing feminine about these leads. They're just as tough within their love for each other as they are towards every other aspect of their lives, and yet there is such a moving vulnerability evident in their choices and reactions that I can't think how any viewer could fail to be moved by their story.
It's essentially one of the best love stories I've ever seen portrayed on the big screen. How this film didn't pick up more Oscars is beyond me. Maybe the Academy just isn't ready to induct gay cowboys.
