Cocoa just had a grand mal seizure. Earlier tonight she was behaving strangely, for her. Stumbling and staggering, bumping into stuff, not seeming to quite know where anything was...all with her sweet smile. It was like watching a darling old woman trying to pretend that everything in her apartment isn't suddently unfamiliar and that she can still cope with being on her own. Then...

God it was scary. I thought she was going to die right there and then. She was absolutely rigid, drooling uncontrollably, eyes half-closed and all runny, making this indescribable noise. I can't even start to tell you what it sounded like, I've never heard her make it before, but I knew out of a sound sleep that's what it was. Once I roused her, and she was barely breathing it seemed, I kissed her and told her we loved her, and that it was ok. She could go. She lay there for perhaps 10 minutes, and then she slowly went back to being Cocoa over a period of about 20 minutes. Now, about 40 minutes post-seizure, she seems fine. she is lying here beside me as I write this, and Pagan is deciding whether it is worth the risk to sniff her nose.

Getting old sucks. Canine or human.
