Entry from June 26, 2002- Girls' State

Oct 01, 2005 12:27

So I was looking back at old entries, and I found this gem from June 26, 2002, from when I was at CT Girls' State, which is basically a gathering of upcoming high school seniors and they form a fake CT state government at pass laws. Anyway, if I had known then I'd be at MHC... OH man, I could apply this same entry to this year and it would still be the same. Anyway, enjoy.

"Hey! I found internet access you guys! Two days have gone by, I have ran for many positions including Attorney and Assessor. I won no races. Very frustrating. Everyone here is an over-achiever, they all play multiple sports, lead several clubs, AND are all super-intelligent. When we introduced ourselves, they all said their name and what sport they played. When it came to me, I told them that I didn't play sports so I didn't know how to introduce myself. At first I only got along with some people, but as first impressions melted I made several connections with people. However, most girls I am really annoyed at; imagine a gathering of 240 opinionated, intelligent, over-achieving females debating over education reforms and I will tell you that is truly HELL. My voice is not heard, only a handful of girls care about environmental issues. Everyone is all obsessed with stopping smoking and whatnot and it's really annoying. I'm against smoking, but there should not be laws against it. People should kill themselves slowly if they want to. It is really discouraging to hear people apathetic about environmental issues. And then I brought up campaign finance reform and people were interested when I discussed it one on one, but to the group they didn't care. Fundraising and lack of money is the number one reason there aren't many female politicians.

And expanding on this idea, people here contradict themselves. They give us all this fem-nazi propaganda, yet are boy-crazy. PICK ONE. They say "women make better politicians then men," yet announce "you get to see the boys then everyone cheers.

I have more complaints but I'm happy at the moment so I really don't feel like voicing them all. And you guys wouldn't fully appreciate cuz you are not living here. LEAVE ME NOTES, because it's my only communication. Write me emails at arielgrag@aol.com. And send your phone # if you want me to call, cuz I need to talk to someone non-political for a little bit. OKAY this is Ariel signing off."
