Continuing my 50th Anniversary countdown of aggregated poll results for Doctor Who Books, TV Serials & Audio Dramas, with number 39:
39. The Dying Days
Doctor: 8th (Paul McGann)
Companions: Benny, Brigadier
Aliens: Ice Warriors
Synopsis: No one would have believed in the dying days of the twentieth century that life existed on Mars. So when the first men return to Mars after 20 years they are in for a nasty shock! Yet what does all this to do with an escaped prisoner, soil samples and a plot to otherthrow the new Prime Minister?
It is up to Bernice Summerfield to find the answer, only the Doctor isn't quite the person she thought he'd be...
Why is it so well loved?
1. In his first adventure after the TV Movie, the 8th Doctor is perfectly captured by Lance Parkin (as indeed are the rest of the characters).
2. It combines a political thriller with big-budget holywood action movie. The result is funny, intriguing and highly enjoyable.
3. The Ice Warriors are once again made a formidible foe which turns the Doctor a force of nature.
Statistical Snippet
This is easily the best-loved story involving Ice Warrirors. The next nearest is The Bride of Peladon at #146.
