Alcatraz
After FC, bob_bunny wanted to do a little sightseeing in San Francisco. Tops on his list was a visit to Alcatraz Island. It turned out to be really interesting!
Here's our passenger ferry's approach.
Click to viewThe building in the foreground was the guards' apartments. Atop "The Rock" is the old penitentiary, the ruins of the Warden's House, and the lighthouse (still in operation).
The smaller buildings at right date back to the original military fort of the 19th century.
The penitentiary itself. I was surprised to learn it was only in use for 30 years.
The cellblock. It looked smaller inside than it does in the movies!
Pretty grim accommodations.
It was a beautiful morning out on the Bay that day...
