Elphaba returned to their shared room that afternoon, having gone to investigate a book in the library.

When she looked over at her roommate, her face quickly turned to an expression of concern. "Is there something wrong?" she asked, thinking that she probably already knew the answer.

Angelica looked up and gave Elphaba a feeble wave. "I have to go home," she said unhappily. "My headmistress at my old school thinks it's time."

"Oh," Elphaba said, her face falling a bit. "I take it that isn't the best of news." She went to sit next to her friend. "You're wanting to stay?"

"I never even wanted to come here at first," Angelica said, shoulders slumping. "But now I don't want to leave. I have to hide what I am from most everyone else there, and the ones I don't have to hide being a mutant from are pretty mean to me."

"I know that sort of feeling very well," Elphaba said. "I know that I will miss you if you leave, also. If you don't wish to leave, maybe you can reason with whoever is sending you back?"

Elphaba tried to be practical about these sort of things.

"I can ask," Angelica said. And she would. "But I owe Miss Frost a lot, and if she wants me back there I really have to go." Whether she wanted to or not.

Elphaba nodded. "How long until you have until you must leave?"

"Just a week," Angelica signed.

She picked up her pillow and hugged it to her chest. "I knew this would happen sooner or later. I was just hoping it would be later."

Elphaba carefully reached over to put a friendly hand on Angelica's shoulder.

"I wish I knew something to say to make this better," she said. "But perhaps we can fill this next week with enough good things to make up for all the time you'll lose?"

Angelica tried to dredge up a smile.

"I'd really appreciate that," she said. "This place has been so awesome. I'm really going to miss it."

"We'll think of something," Elphaba said. "We can start tonight, in fact. I could cook you dinner or we could do... whatever you like, really."

"Dinner would be awfully sweet of you," Angelica said. Her stomach rumbled in agreement. She'd been sitting there for hours looking at the letter, and hadn't even thought about eating.

"What would you like?" Elphaba said. "I wont even ask you to eat vegan, I'll cook whatever you want."

This was for Angelica, after all.

"Oh, I wouldn't dream of asking you to cook something you can't eat," Angelica said. "What's your specialty? What's your favorite thing to cook?"

"I can do a stir-fryed vegetable mix with rice," Elphaba offered. "It's something I've taught myself while here, it usually turns out quite tasty as long as I find the right vegetables."

"Mmm, that sounds yummy," Angelica said with a genuine smile. "You can make that if you want."
