Our younger dog Sunny passed away from cancer this morning. She was 8 years old.
She'd been looking sick the past week, so we took her into the vet about noon yesterday. They ran some tests and apparently it was very advanced. We had taken her in for bloodwork in late July and they assured us she was fine. I have no idea how they could have missed something this serious.
We got the call at around 6 AM and drove into the pet hospital to say our goodbyes. We've all been a wreck, especially me. But I know I should take comfort in the fact that as quirky and problematic as she was, we always loved her and gave her the best home possible.
What keeps killing me is that our older dog, Maggie, is still walking around the house looking for her sister. I don't know if dogs understand the concept of death, but I hope they do, because this is totally breaking my heart.
I'm not trying to depress anyone with this, I'm just trying to get a handle on the situation and I'm not really sure how exactly to do that.
I hope you all have a great Holiday season, and be sure to keep your family (and your pets) close.
Best, Matt
