It's sad, but true that there are people out there, (religious fundamentalists and homophobes) who feel that they have the right to tell people how to live, what to think, and what to believe. Despite the fact that their religions often preach tolerance and the right to make your own choices, they feel that their "commitment to God" allows them to put a gun (knife, torch, etc.) to a person's head and say, "You will be like us or else!".
The founding father's of our country were clear in their view that our nation was to respect everyone's right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". The ONLY caveat was that that pursuit not tread on the same rights of other citizens. Laws are supposed to be designed to provide society with a framework for people to deal with one another in an organized and non-violent way. Being a law-abiding citizen isn't the same as being "moral". Those that push to have our government make morality laws either miss that distinction, or are cynically attacking the very nature of our country for their own selfish purposes, specifically the self-righteous and/or self-aggrandizing pursuit of power. The people who are most against gay-marriage and scream about it the loudest tend to fall in the later category.
