I know it's been a couple of months since this post and I don't know how things have worked out so far, but I know things are probably not all figured out yet. But I wanted to let you know I'm praying for you and Iris, and the kids. You have great kids, and I'm so glad I had a chance to get to know them a bit before we moved. I'm glad that you want to go back to school and get your GED, and if you need any help, let me know. I don't know much about the GED, and I know I'm not in town any more, but if there's any help I can give over email or AIM, I'm willing to help, just say the word. I've tutored a bit before, so maybe I can help. I won't be offended if you don't want my help, but I want you to know the offer is there. Other than that, my best advice is to read as much and as often as you can.
As for Iris's mom, I guess I've always seen her like a second mom to me, but I can understand how she could be intimidating in some contexts. Just remember the reason she's intimidating: She's a mama bear! Just kidding. But in all honesty, she just wants the best for Iris, and to protect Iris as much as she can. And, since you are close to her daughter, she also wants whats best for you too. Even though it might not feel like it, she DOES have your best interests at heart.
I also understand how you might not feel very social with Iris' friends and how it's hard to be yourself with them (us, lol). It took me forever to consider Tom's friends my own! But for what it's worth, I know you make Iris happy, and thats enough for me to call you friend if you don't mind it.
I hope things are getting a bit less confusing for you.
